Judith Anis is a versatile painter and engraver who has focused in recent years on research into the movement of the human body and the way in which movement reflects relationships.

The works presented in the exhibition are based on quick sketches made during rehearsals by two dancers, a mother and daughter – Orit and Alma Livne –  in preparation for a joint dance performance.

Anis makes quick sketches of the bodies in motion from observation, repeatedly repeating each movement with quick hand strokes until it is assimilated and ready for painting in color.

Anis, a daughter and mother herself, testifies that as much as the project seeks to capture the subtleties of the various body movements, it is a study of relationships through color, stain, and the visual transfer of weight: that is, where the brush is grounded in the paper and planted in it, and where it is released and moves freely. In some paintings, the figures appear heavy and clumsy, and in others they detach from the ground and send up light limbs; Sometimes the figures cradle or embrace each other, and sometimes they push or carry each other. With delicate lines and transparent layers of paint, Anis articulates an intimate physical dialogue between mother and daughter, and through it explores one of the most ancient and complex relationships, which never ceases to be contemporary.
